Anytime I can offer a UNRESTORED classic car, I get incredibly excited! This gorgeous Fiat has been preserved and enjoyed and looks absolutely breathtaking! This is a long ad, but please be sure to read the entire thing – there is a lot of wonderful detail to cover! Let’s dive right in!
The Fiat 600 was designed and brought to life by Dante Giacosa (designer of many notable Fiats including the mechanical design of the Fiat 500) and was crafted by some of the best minds and hands Italy had to offer. The 600 was not just a bigger Fiat 500, despite what some similar looks and nomenclature would suggest. The Fiat 600 was a completely new car. One of the most drastic differences between the two cars was the watercooled engine the 600 now boasted over the 500’s air cooled motor. This meant effective heat for the car most notably. The 600 featured an alarmingly large interior despite its overall size as well. The suspension was revised and featured leaf spring front and coil over shock rears which made for a much better driving car then the swing axle suspension cars of its peers and cars past. Overall the car had been a major improvement over the 500 in most all regards.
Fiat then took the successful 600 and with some suspension from the 1100, crafted the now historic Multipla. Made to be a true people carrier, but concurrently becoming an incredibly enjoyable car to drive as well as a national icon in Italy, the Multipla was successful not just in execution, but style. Organic Italian styling from a quintessential Italian manufacturer combined with wonderful function does not get much better than the Multipla.
Let’s move on to this car specifically:
Our history with this car has been short unfortunately, having only purchased the car this year. However, our knowledge of the history of the car runs deep. We purchased from Gooding & Co in a wonderful, extremely high end car auction. For those of you who are not familiar with Gooding, they are known to offer the most spectular, rare, beautiful and historic cars in the world. Their reputation precedes their name both in terms of quality and integrity and are a pillar within the automotive world. They, along with Bonhams, Christies and RM, continually set records for the highest priced cars sold in auction. You do not get to the level of auctioning $20 million cars without being a cornerstone to the industry.
The car was placed into auction with Gooding from its then owner since 1996. Prior to his ownership, Harry Deaver purchased the car brand new, which he owned for the aforementioned 40 years. That’s right, this car has only had 3 owners, and 99% of its life has only been in two hands. Harry and its subsequent owner took exquisite care of the car, knowing that they were only looking after it to hand it down for generations to come. This is a Euro spec Multipla as well, which means mileage appears in kilometers. Hold onto your hats: this car has only 11,405kms! That is about ~7,000 miles. That is it! We purchased the car with 11,326kms and have enjoyed every mile, ahem, kilometer.
But wait, this car continues to become more special. The paint is original, showing wonderful light patina and history in its still very shiny and beautiful coat. The tires are original and in remarkably wonderful condition! No flat spots and they hold air wonderfully! The glass and seals are original! The interior is original! And aside from a rebuild on the brakes and fuel pump in the late 1990’s, this Multipla retains almost every ounce of its originality!
Of EXTREMELY RARE nature is the original Fiat roof rack. Near impossible to find, this roof rack is in wonderful shape and accents the car wonderfully! The value of this roof rack alone is extraordinary.
There is even more. It comes with the original tool kit, jack and manuals! Check out the pics below! More you say?? Ok, it also comes with a box of original spare parts (Not all shown below).
This Fiat was not a one off purchase. It sits within an extremely robust collection filled with both rare and eclectic cars. Not only that, this Multipla was made at home within an extensive collection of rare and beautiful classic Fiats, including many Multiplas. Please take a moment to scroll to the bottom of the page to take note of some its peers. Fiat experts watch over and maintain this beauty and assure that it is in wonderful running and driving condition. Check the rest of the pictures as well for the car on the road. This car is ready to be driven and was not trailered to our photo site.
The Condition and Service:
Let’s start on the engine and drivetrain:
This engine comes to life with a turn of the key and a pull of the floor mounted starter switch without any drama. It warms up nicely and revs beautifully. The car cruises comfortably at 50mph+ and the engine has lots of pep!
The 4 speed transmission is in wonderful shape. The shifter eases into gear without any drama and has no grinds from the syncros!
Rides very well, especially considering its vintage. No clunks or bangs.
Confident pedal, great pressure with a firm positive stop.
Steering feels good, no excessive play or vibrations.
Let’s continue to the exterior:
-PAINT and BODY
The paint is quite nice and shines wonderfully despite is age. It has that great preserved paint look and really looks the part. It has a wonderful earthy patina to it. Some little scratches, a few light dents in the front or some small chips all add to the stories, character and unrestored nature of the car. The floors are solid, no rot, so are the panels. Near totally rust free. Light oxidation near some chips and at high traffic areas and a couple very small bubbles which are solid underneath, not rot on the passenger side rear quarter (see pics below). Its totally solid metal just some very small paint pop. Light oxidation on underside as expected, no rot to be found
Original tires and wheels. No vibrations or flat spots on the tires! Light surface level cracks to be expected for their age, but very drivable none-the-less.
-BUMPERS and BRIGHT WORK
Shines wonderfully with no major flaws and very light patina.
Great shape with only some minor chips, wood in great shape. Rubber has some drying of the outside from age, but it still quiet soft.
Onto the cabin:
ORIGINAL INTERIOR AND SEATS! The seats are in beautiful shape! No tears or wear! Rear seats in great shape with a minor stain from being folded for years against a metal part.
Fantastic original shape!
The wheel is in great shape. Smooth, crack free and no fade.
This beauty comes with the original spare with original jack. Also included is the original tool kit, original manuals and spare NOS parts!
This is such a treat to drive this little beauty! Its hard not to feel you are humming along an Italian mountain road when driving the Multipla. Maybe its the family in the car, off for a little holiday in the mountains. Since both front and rear bench seats fold flat, the wife and you could a little nap while the kids play at a rest along on the way. There are few cars to experience true Italian motoring. Ferraris and Lamborghinis always have their place, but the real stories, the real history came from the people’s cars. The car starts right up and settles into idle quickly! She gets LOADS of attention, more than most exotic cars! The Multipla is extremely roomy and feels airy and relaxing. She paces traffic no problem and turns on a dime! And the rarity! I don’t think I would be out of line to say this is one of a handful if not less unrestored, low mile Multiplas out there. Anyone with the will and a check can buy a restored Multipla. And further, anyone with the desire for headaches can buy a ratty unrestored car. But this Multipla is ready for ANY preservation class show out there. Get ready to line your shelves with trophies and your mind with memories in your stunning 600!
Fiat collectors: this is a car that is a must have for your collection. It has tremendous historic value, without the endeavors of tremendous historic price. It also allows your collection to explore for breadth and depth that just Fiat branded cars. These come up for sale rarely and certainly never in this condition, with original paint and 7k miles! It would suffice to say you will miss your opportunity for the perfect collection piece permanently. THIS CAR IS BEING OFFERED AT NO RESERVE!!
Feel free to ask me any questions at all. Residents around the world I am happy to be flexible for your arranged shipper so that you can get your new car as soon as possible. International buyers are welcome.
My standard disclaimer/mantra for any car regardless of service or price: The car is sold with no warranty. You are buying a used car. Eventually every car will break, if you find one that doesn’t please let me know. I do my ABSOLUTE BEST to offer only cars that are of TOP NOTCH service. I am not a dealer, just a man who loves Fiat (among other cars) and hope to pass along my passion and fervor for these cars. That said if ever you encounter an issue I do my best to provide advice, direction or even parts if I have them. Please understand that it is a used car and will have signs of use. That means please do not expect a showroom brand new car. Please adjust your expectation level to that of a unrestored and driven car, but however is WELL above average. This is EXTREMELY nice condition for a unrestored Multipla, but please just remember that car is truly perfect. Please only bid if you intend to buy. If you would like to have an Ebay 3rd party mechanic service check out the car I MORE than welcome it. Please have the car checked out BEFORE bidding and not after, if you intend to use that service. And please, if you would like to utilize this service, contact me with more than a couple days left in the auction so we can arrange schedules. Please check your local laws and registration procedures before buying. Buying over the internet can be scary sometimes! I get it, because I am an enthusiast too!! For that very reason, I am more than happy to answer every and any question you may so you know 100% what you are buying. But, please ask any and all questions ahead of purchase! All sales are final, you are buying as-is, the sky is blue, etc, etc. Sorry to have to give the boring speech.
Please feel free to ask any and all questions!!
