I am ECSTATIC to offer for a sale this beautiful, unrestored, 1978 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe.  It has been EXTRAORDINARILY well cared for, with absolutely UNMATCHED ownership history and service.  It drives like a DREAM, feels near brand new and looks absolutely stunning in Grand Prix White over Dark Brown Leather.  This is a long ad, but please be sure to read the entire thing – there is a lot of wonderful detail to cover!  Let’s dive right in!

Background:

Heritage and driving experience are a mark for which Porsche scores extremely high points.  So let’s discuss this car’s history to begin.

This car was born #396 of 451 US bound 930 Turbo in 1978.  With 1978 having the lowest production figures of all US 930 Turbo, we begin to set the tone of only the beginning of what makes this car special.  Produced with engine #6881169, trans #781132 in Grand Prix White over Dark Brown Leather, this beauty is matching numbers and its original color combination.  This 930 was ordered in Los Angeles California by Sandy Sigoloff, the famous corporate take-over expert in Los Angeles with the following options:

-CA emissions (required as a CA car)

-Limited Slip Differential

-Electric Passenger Side Mirror

-Black Headliner

-Electric Sunroof

Sandy drove the car minimally; he viewed it as an investment since the 930 program was cancelled after 1979 in the US.  However, in 1985 when Sandy found out there would be another 930 brought to the US, it was time to sell his investment. He sold the car, then with 3,400 miles, to its current owner, who is a factory-trained Porsche tech with 30+ years of Porsche experience and owner of a major independent Porsche service shop in Los Angeles.  THIS is the dream owner to every Porsche enthusiast!  It keeps getting better…

The current owner, a hobbyist pilot as well (known for their extreme meticulousness), kept this as his weekend enjoyment only, and accrued less than 100,000 miles in his 30 year ownership, less than 3,500 miles per year.  The mileage, as you would imagine, was higher when first purchased, with about 55k miles accrued in 10 years and the remaining approximately 40k occurring in the following 20 years.  This was one of a few beautiful Porsches in his collection, and although extremely painstaking to sell, greater ambitions and early retirement are in his sights.

There are few people who will be lucky enough to own a 930 with 30 years of continued Porsche trained ownership and service.  Moreover, this is the highly sought after ’78 – extremely low production, first year for the 3.3L intercooled, 300hp beauty of an engine, first year for the 917 brakes and draped in a stunning color combination.  As you could imagine, this car comes with countless service records and even receipts from when Sandy owned the car.  Just how meticulous has the owner been over time?  For example, the 930 was a hot commodity for thieves in the 80’s and thus a hidden alarm was installed when purchased from Sandy. Not only was it an incredibly noninvasive and hidden install, but wiring diagrams were hand drawn for every wire and relay and retained for the future.  Check out the pics below!   Personal notes, service records, part numbers for parts – details, details, details.

This gorgeous 930 comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche stating the original build numbers and options as well.

This car was first sold in California and has spent its entire life in this sunny, dry state!  Not a drop of rust, rot, or weather grime, NO ISSUES!  And it was kept in dry storage, started often and serviced with dedication and care even when the miles were not being accrued.

It keeps getting better!  Let’s continue!

The Condition and Service:

Let’s start on the engine and drivetrain:

-ENGINE

This engine has VERY low miles (~ 3,300 a year), with only 100,200 miles appearing on the odometer though the car shows as one with a quarter of that.  It was driven and enjoyed as it should be, but being owned by someone who wanted to enjoy it for decades and is merely a custodian of the car, keeping it well for the next owner.  The engine is EXTREMELY healthy and has loads of smooth power!  It starts right up, cold or warm, goes through its warm up cycle flawlessly and settles into idle perfectly.  With even a crack of the throttle it, the 930 feels torquey and powerful, and effortlessly pulls away!  More then a leisurely drive?  Keep your foot in it until over 4k rpm and the real thrill of the engine comes to life!  The turbo is in its sweet spot of building boost, the car squats down hard and digs in like a cheetah on the hunt, grappling for more asphalt.  It is nothing less then a rocketship!  The sound of that flat 6 with a big fist of turbo noise whooshing behind you reminds you very quickly how special this car really is. ZERO air/fuel issues, ZERO detonation, ZERO black smoke, ZERO hesitations or flat spots.

In March 1988, our favorite current owner found that during his 15k service that a couple of the problematic Porsche head studs had cracked.  The engine was pulled for a complete overhaul.  This included a full valve job with a port and polish and a light surfacing. The cams were upgraded to the very common 911SC cams which improved the powerband and driveability of the 930. This also included an upgrade to 911SC springs and Carrera tensioners.  Also the exhaust was upgraded to euro exhaust, fan drive was changed for better cooling.  Case savers and dilavar studs were used in reassembly and braided oil line to the turbo added for better reliability.

Major service internals thereafter where always every 15k miles.  12/1/89 at 34,981, 12/17/1991 at 50,993 an so on.  More recently, at 99k it received new plugs, valve adjustment, a new intake hoses, new belt, throttle o-ring, turbo o-ring and a full motor cleaning with fresh oil.  At 98k it received a fuel gauge R&R. 95k miles the car received a mainshaft seal and turbo oil feed line.  There is extensive history from even the smallest services there-on-back as well.  There is no other owner and care taker one could wish for other than a Porsche shop owner and factory tech!

 -TRANSAXLE

The 930 4 speed transmission is in FANTASTIC shape.  Extremely tight, confident shifts. NO grinds, NO syncro issues.  Slips into 1st from a roll.  The shifter eases into gear without any drama.  Gearing is long in the 4 speed and has plenty of gear left on the highway.  At 95k the car received a new clutch, flywheel seal, clutch cable and rebuilt clutch/brake pedal assembly.  At 99k the clutch fork and collar were regreased and the trans received fresh gear oil.

 -SUSPENSION

No bangs, no rough ride, no clunks! The shocks dampen wonderfully!  The car is tight in corners, and comfortable on the straights!  Rubber bushings are in great shape, no degradation or rubber coming apart.  New ball joints, R&R struts, replace strut bearings at 83k miles.

 -BRAKES

Confident pedal, great pressure with a firm positive stop.  Pads and rotors have approximately 50-60% life in both front and rear and feel fantastic!

 -STEERING

Steering is very tight, no dead spots or play.

Let’s continue to the exterior:

-PAINT and BODY
The paint is VERY nice!  It is a 9- out of 10 easily.  Shiny, beautiful, original Grand Prix White paint was recently polished, finished and waxed by a highly acclaimed detailer here in LA.  It looks FANTASTIC.  NO ACCIDENTS. NO RUST.  Clean floors, clean door jambs, clean sunroof channels, clean drains, even the the low and susceptible condenser grill is free of dents!  The flaws are so minor they are essentially unnoticeable unless someone points them out.  There is a small nick in the sharkfin stone guard on the drivers side.  It has not affected the paint, only a small nick in the plastic stone guard.  There are some VERY minor stone chips.  A couple very small on the front bumper, a small chip on the drivers door near the handle, a couple small chips on the door opening edge, some very light stone chips on the underside of the rockers and a couple almost unnoticeable flaws/light scuffs etc.  I can only see some of these extremely minor flaws from certain angles and I can’t capture it in pictures well, but I have included below any of the photographable flaws.  There is no accident damage on the car!  There are some light paint blends on the passenger door that are during Sandy’s ownership in the late 70’s/early 80’s that appear to have been from some light scratch blending. It took my eyes literally being 6 inches away from the door during its photo session to even see them.  They are VERY light blends, match 100% in hue and color and nearly imperceptible.  They in no way take away from the overall beauty of the car, nor do any of the other very minor flaws. They are WELL below any expectation level for a Porsche of this year or miles.   Even against more modern cars the paint will compete head to head – it VERY nice.  This is a dry SoCal car!  That means no rust lurking under the surface ready to pop up and ruin your paint!  If there was a place to buy ANY Porsche, it is dry, warm SoCal.  No rain and no road salt!  Check out the underside pics too, no dents in the floors, no rust, a P-car lovers dream.

 -TIRES

The Dunlop’s have loads of tread life left on the tires!  75%+ even on a bad day!   No leaks, flat spots or odd tread issues.  The car also comes with an extra set of four more Dunlops with the same amount of tread remaining!

-WHEELS
The chrome Fuchs wheels look STUNNING on the 930 and are near flawless!  They were just recently polished and are blinding!

-BUMPERS, VALANCES and PLASTICS
The bumpers are in wonderful shape and free of the typical sun fade and hardening on the plastic bits that is so common in them.  They, along with the other plastic or rubberized plastic trim, shines beautifully!  The accordion ends on the bumpers are in great shape, the bumperettes are shiny, soft and in great shape!  No dents, cracks or issues!

-GLASS
Not to let a pebble defeat this car, the windshield is great shape, with no chips or sandblasting.  It is beautifully clear glass that makes a world of difference.  It makes the car feel brand new!  The door and rear glass is wonderful shape!  Clear and clean!

Onto the cabin:

-SEATS
The Dark Brown leather seats are beyond fantastic!!!  Please pause for a minute and look at the pics below – they appear as they just rolled off the assembly line.  Look at the texture, the totally zero wear, the deep color…Perfect!!  They are incredibly supportive with what feels like zero foam wear. The leather and foam is SO soft and comfortable.  I TRULY love driving this car.  You sit in perfect steering wheel/pedal distance in these buttery soft seats!  The leather has been extraordinarily well cared for!  The underside of the seats are even clean!  The springs look like they just got a brand new coat of black paint.  The sliders are smooth and work great.  The leather has been recently cleaned and conditioned as well!  Words and pictures do not express how wonderful it is to spend time in these chocolate colored beauties!  Rear seats are for all purposes unused and perfect.  There is a matching rear seat carpet cover for when the seats are folded.

-DASHBOARD

ZERO cracks.  ZERO lifting.  Beautiful shape!!

-DOOR PANELS

Gorgeous panels, wonderful map pockets and carpet!

-HEADLINER

The black headliner is in fantastic shape and sunroof headliner is in great shape too!

-CARPET

VERY beautiful carpet in the car!  It has been shampooed and cleaned as part of the overall detail.  It is incredibly clean, has no heel wear or stains – check out the pics!  Carpet in the trunk is in VERY nice shape!

-POWER WINDOWS
Both windows work!

-SUNROOF

Sunroof works perfectly!  The roof slides back and forth very quickly and seals perfectly, no leaks or air coming in!

-RADIO
The radio was replaced with a very nice sounding Alpine headunit for anyday use.  The better story comes from the original radio which was removed by Follmer Porsche/Audi when the car was purchased by Sandy.  Sandy was a stickler for perfection and based on records essentially picked up the car and immediately said the stock radio was not for him.  With barely a couple spins on the odometer, Follmer removed the stock radio and replaced with with a Blaupunkt Bamberg.  That same Bamberg and its components are included in the sale!  Power antenna works perfect!

-AC/HEAT
AC powers up and blows nice and cold!  Take that old Porsches!  Blowers work great, heater fans work great!

-STEERING WHEEL
The wheel is soft and feels great!

-CARGO AREA

The cargo area is fantastic shape.  Check out the pics!  Clean battery – no corrosion. Clean brake master area – no spills!  Clean gas tank – no rust or seeping!  Clean fuse panel – no corrosion!  Clean body and paint!!  Totally ideal!!!

Now lets get into everyone’s favorite section…

-THE EXTRAS!!!

This car retains so much of its history and comes with the original owners manual, original warranty book.

It also comes with the original tool kit AND the EXTREMELY hard to find roadside repair kit.  This kit contained gaskets, clutch cable, valve springs, spark plugs, wire boots, and much more.  It is complete and very original to add to the overall package of this beautiful 930.  The car also comes with the Porsche tire air pump and Porsche original road side repair gloves.  This stunning 930 comes with, as mentioned, folders of service records, wiring diagrams, receipts, notes, history logs, manuals and much more!

The Experience:

How is is possible to sum up this driving experience?  Even when approaching this 930, you can feel how special it really is.  It’s not just any 911.  It has roots in storied Porsche racing when you think of the intercooled turbocharged H6.  LeMans livery seems to flicker on and off when you stare at it.  You hear the Porsche 917 brakes howling and squealing down the end of the Mulsanne Straight when you glance at the calipers peeking out from behind the Fuchs.  A turn of the key and the engine roars to life and settles down into an aggressive idle.  The clutch is very easy to modulate and a light lift alone is all that is needed to get you rolling away.  Perhaps, you need to gently cruise out of town first, rowing 1st, 2nd and 3rd weaving slowly through the streets.  The steering is direct and gives good feel and the engine is tame and easy to drive.  The highway on-ramp approaches, a blip of the gas and a downshift to 2nd, the turbo beginning to spool up, you reshuffle yourself in the drivers seat a bit knowing what is about to occur…and here it comes!  The turbo is spooled, the car squats in the back and begins to gobble up road.  2nd is a long gear but you are at redline very quickly.  A decisive shift to 3rd and the power has not let up as things start to get quite fast.  The turbo is whistling and whooshing like a jet and you are still pinned in your seat.  Dare you grab 4th gear with your foot still buried?  Maybe later, as you settle back down into a calm highway pace – the snail shaped monster under the hood is calm again and your Jekyll and Hyde Porsche just made your day…again.

Vicarious driving aside, this 930 is a dream to drive. It is tight, very comfortable, very quick, nimble and smooth.  THIS is the Porsche to understand what makes Porsche’s so great.  There are few cars from the that can feel pure, powerful and modern – this 911 Turbo is it! It has all the power it had from the factory and then some, and from even a little gas is torquey and responsive. I hope you can tell by my long ad that this car is an amazing pre-owned and beautiful Porsche 930.  There are other 930 out there and if you can find one with a better ownership, service, care and condition, I urge you to buy it. This is not a 25k mile car that will need every seal and nut and bolt replaced to be streetable or reliable.  This is a car that was enjoyed with none-the-less very low miles but the extensive current and preventative maintenance you would like to see in an investment quality car such as this.  This really is a very special car to drive and with the extraordinary care mechanically and cosmetically it has received, it is a worry free 930, ready to be enjoyed just in time for summer!

As mentioned, this is an investment quality car and its is VERY much the time to buy a 930.  Thought you missed the window with swing in prices we saw in the last few years?  These early 930 are about to CRAZY on price with the early signs of a ramping up beginning to occur. There is a 1976 930 that just came for sale on Porsche Club of America for $300k!  The window is closing before another massive price rally and quality cars like this will require much more financial planning.  NOW is the time to make your purchases for enjoyment, for investment or for both.

Feel free to ask me any questions at all.  Residents around the country I am happy to be flexible for your arranged shipper so that you can get your new car as soon as possible.   CA residents, please note the license plates will be retained by the current owner.

My standard disclaimer/mantra for any car regardless of service or price: The car is sold with no warranty.  You are buying a used car.  Eventually every car will break, if you find one that doesn’t please let me know.  I do my ABSOLUTE BEST to offer only cars that are of TOP NOTCH service.  I am not a dealer, just a guy who loves Porsches (among other cars) and hope to pass along my passion and fervor for these cars.  That said if ever you encounter an issue I do my best to provide advice, direction or even parts if I have them.  Please understand that it is a used car and will have minor signs of use.  That means please do not expect a showroom brand new car. Please adjust your expectation level to that of a 100,000 mile car, but however is WELL above average for it’s year/miles.   This is very solid miles for a Porsche of this year, but please just remember that no 100,000 mile car is perfect.  It is though a very clean, very nice 930!  Please only bid if you intend to buy.  If you would like to have an Ebay 3rd party mechanic service check out the car I MORE than welcome it.  Please have the car checked out BEFORE bidding and not after, if you intend to use that service.  And please, if you would like to utilize this service, contact me with more than a couple days left in the auction so we can arrange schedules.  Please check your local laws and registration procedures before buying.  Buying over the internet can be scary sometimes!  I get it, because I am an enthusiast too!!  For that very reason, I am more than happy to answer every and any question you may so you know 100% what you are buying.  But, please ask any and all questions ahead of purchase!  All sales are final, you are buying as-is, the sky is blue, etc, etc. Sorry to have to give the boring speech.

Please feel free to ask any and all questions!!
