I am THRILLED to offer for a sale this beautiful, RESTORED, 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo-Look Cabriolet.  It has been EXTRAORDINARILY well cared for, with absolutely UNMATCHED ownership history and service.  It drives like a DREAM, feels near brand new and looks absolutely stunning in Silver Metallic over Black Leather.  This is a long ad, but please be sure to read the entire thing – there is a lot of wonderful detail to cover!  Let’s dive right in!

Background:

First, let’s set the tone for this beauty’s current ownership. The current owner is a factory-trained Porsche tech with 30+ years of Porsche experience and owner of a major independent Porsche service shop in Los Angeles.  THIS is the dream owner to every Porsche enthusiast!  It keeps getting better…

Also a hobbyist pilot as well (known for their extreme meticulousness), the current owner restored this Cabrio as a Christmas present to his wife in 2005 to add to their wonderful collection of Porsches.  Now let’s pause there for one moment.  Every married man (and woman) knows that if you were restore a car for your wife (or husband), it would have to be perfect.  How could you not build it with love?  It sounds a little Hallmark, but it’s true!  A car that was restored and built for a loved one just has something so much more special about it.  Every nut and bolt wasn’t turned for an end result of a running car, they were turned for that special person it was built for.  Dare I say, cars built with that purpose always make for better and more special cars!  The couple kept this as occasional weekend enjoyment only, and accrued less than 5,000 miles in their 10 year ownership; less than 500 miles per year.   This was one of a few beautiful Porsches in his collection, and although extremely painstaking to sell, especially with the skyrocketing value of air-cooled Porsches, more strategic real estate and business transactions set the tone for an early retirement and greater importance.

This is ONLY a 2 owner car in its 28 year old life, and as you could imagine, this car comes with countless service records and even receipts.  Just how meticulous has the owner been over time?  Personal notes, service records, part numbers for parts and even a restoration journal documenting the build! – details, details, details.  Want more? Feel free to take a look at the EXTREMELY clean 1978 Porsche 930 Turbo of our favorite owner that we just sold!  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-911-930-Turbo-/251971139119?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3aaaa6762f&item=251971139119

Porsche Heaven!

When this 911 arrived in the owners hands in early 2005, it had only had been driven 67,000 miles by its only other owner, his client Lee.  That means the car had been under the current owner’s eye and care for a very long time prior to 2005!  Lee purchased this car brand new in California and where it has spent its entire life in this sunny, dry state!  Not a drop of rust, rot, or weather grime, NO ISSUES!  And it was kept in dry storage, started often and serviced with dedication and care even when the miles were not being accrued.  This now 2 owner car though was Dark Blue with a Blue convertible top and a factory narrow body.  Wanting to give his wife something special and exactly to her liking, the current owner dove in head first into a full cosmetic and mechanical restoration as well as an all metal Turbo-Look widebody conversion using OEM Porsche parts.  This is not a fiberglass bolt up kit!  These are Porsche factory fenders and metal!

It keeps getting better too!  Let’s continue and dive into the details and the restoration!

The Condition and Service:

Let’s start on the engine and drivetrain:

-ENGINE

This engine has EXTREMELY low miles (~ 500 a year), with only ~5,000 on a FULL and DOCUMENTED rebuild. And with only 72,400 miles appearing on the odometer as well, the car shows as if it had one with a quarter of that.  It was driven and enjoyed as it should be, but being owned by someone who wanted to enjoy it for decades, it was showed more than generous preemptive care.

First let’s discuss the engine rebuild:

These are ALL Porsche OEM parts, installed and rebuilt by a factory trained Porsche tech with 30+ years of experience.  Needless to say, this engine runs like a DREAM and is ready to go live 200k+ miles of life!  Check out the pics of the engine rebuild below – note even the factory orange case sealant was used!  Details!  This was a NO expense spared rebuild!  Even take note of the fan and fan housing!  Usually these oxidize over time, so in a preventative step the fan was powder coated in a marbled color called “Silver Vein” and the fan housing powder coated in a color called “Hi Yo Silver”.  These little details to keep the engine looking beautiful as well as running beautiful really show the care and love with which this car was assembled.

The engine is VERY healthy and has loads of smooth power!   It starts right up, cold or warm, goes through its warm up cycle flawlessly and settles into idle perfectly.  With even a crack of the throttle it, the Carrera feels torquey and powerful, and effortlessly pulls away!  No fueling issues, no DME issues, this 911 engine feels like its brand new.  This is a NO LEAKS engine.  Read that again Porsche fans!  Note the pics below!

-TRANSMISSION

Gone is the 915 transmission for 1987!  In 1987 the drastically more precise G50 transmission was introduced to much acclaim and relief to many Porsche fans!  The G50 is tight, direct and with no ambiguity! It is in FANTASTIC shape.  The syncros truly were a blessing in the G50 and boy does it show.  NO grinds, NO syncro issues.  With just a very light touch, the trans shifts wonderfully and confidently into gear.  This is the first year for the hydraulic clutch as well which has a much better release point and ease of ownership.  No cables to break or adjust!

And of course the drivetrain wasn’t ignored in the rebuild!

No bangs, no rough ride, no clunks!  The shocks dampen wonderfully!  The car is tight in corners, and comfortable on the straights!  Rubber bushings are in great shape, no degradation or rubber coming apart.

-BRAKES

Confident pedal, great pressure with a firm positive stop.  Pads have 80% life in both front and rear, rotors were replaced in the front and rear at the same time and have virtually no wear lip – 90%++ wear life left.

-STEERING

Steering is very tight, aligned nicely, doesn’t pull and weights up nicely at speed.  No dead spots or play.  Tie rod ends are in great shape, with no cracking of the rubber or play.

Let’s continue to the exterior:

-PAINT and BODY

Let’s start with the body. The owner did not want to have a chopped-up or fiberglass Turbo-Look as we see so often. He wanted it done right!  The front fenders are OEM Porsche 930 front fenders which bolt on and look perfect.  The rear fenders are part of the unibody structure, so to best accomplish a clean all metal conversion, he hired Joe George, a premier metal and Porsche fabricator in Los Angeles.  He started with BRAND NEW OEM Porsche metal rear fenders and carefully grafted them to the original body after cutting out the old metal.  Check out the pics below.  Gorgeous, clean welds, no bowing inwards from the weld heat.  As clean as you can get!  Joe George is a metal magician and if there was ANYONE to work on the car, it is him!  Also take note in the pics, the rocker and bumper extensions are all metal as well!  Again, OEM Porsche metal parts!

After Joe finished his magic, the car was handed off to Scott Nething of TNS Auto Refinishing.  Scott and TNS are known for their restorations and high quality paint jobs and are most often seen winning custom car and hot rod awards in the SoCal area.  After disassembly, prepping, blocking and priming, the Cabrio was sprayed with Porsche Silver Metallic paint.  Beautiful, rich and glistening, this Silver is a show stopper!

The paint is VERY nice!  It is a 9- out of 10 easily.  Shiny, beautiful Silver Metallic paint was recently polished, finished and waxed by a highly acclaimed detailer here in LA.  It looks FANTASTIC.  CLEAN and CLEAR CarFax.  NO ACCIDENTS. NO RUST. Clean floors, clean door jambs (check the pictures!!!), even the the low and susceptible condenser grill is free of dents!  The flaws are so minor they are essentially unnoticeable unless someone points them out.  There are a couple very small stone chips on the front hood and bumper area (note the pics)  A small chip that was touched up at the gas filler door (pictured), and a few VERY minor flaws, scratches.  They are WELL below any expectation level for a Porsche of this year or miles.   Even against more modern cars the paint will compete head to head – it VERY nice.  This is a dry SoCal car!  That means no rust lurking under the surface ready to pop up and ruin your paint!  If there was a place to buy ANY Porsche, it is dry, warm SoCal.  No rain and no road salt!  Check out the underside pics too, no dents in the floors, no rust, a P-car lovers dream.   There are some scratches on the AC condenser whammy bar (the little bar just under the bumper that helps protect the condenser) and some light oxidation where they appear – the only I can find on the whole car.  It is common for this bar to scrape a driveway or speed bump, but simply unbolts if the new owner would like to powdercoat it.  (Though, I would not not expect it to last long!).

The Experience:
Driving this 911 is a dream. It is tight, very comfortable, very quick, nimble and smooth.  No cowl shake, no rattles and bangs.  TIGHT like it left the factory.  THIS is the Porsche to understand what makes Porsche’s so great.  I can’t help but feel as though I should be on the Autobahn with the top down, or a winding German country road on a cool morning.  The cabriolet is truly a Porsche to experience.  Open air, harmonious flat 6 howling away behind you, beautiful leather appointments; what could be better.  I spend time too often in tight, closed coupes, that the cabrio reminds me what motoring is all about.  It’s not just the rush of the speed or the rarity of the car.  It’s the freedom and the connection to the drive itself.  Rarely can a car connect you like this Cabrio can.  The Turbo-Look widebody gives the Cabrio a wonderful stance and because it is all metal you don’t fear driving it and cracked fiberglass.  M491 factory optioned Turbo-Look cars are hard to find and moreover usually never show the care and restoration this car has received.  This is a fantastic Porsche to just get out there and drive!  She’s stunning, capable, reliable and ready for any top down adventure.  There are few cars from the 80’s that can feel pure and modern – this 911 is it!  It has all the power it had from the factory an then some, and from even a little gas is torquey and responsive.  No clunks from the suspension, no pops going into driveways!  I hope you can tell by my long ad that this car is an amazing pre-owned and beautiful Porsche.
There are other 911 Cabrio out there and if you can find one with a better ownership, service, care and condition, I urge you to buy it. This is not a 25k mile car that will need every seal and nut and bolt replaced to be streetable or reliable.  This is a car that was enjoyed with none-the-less EXTREMELY low miles on the engine and VERY low miles on the entire car, and features extensive current and preventative maintenance you would like to see on any Porsche.  This really is a special car to drive and with the care mechanically and cosmetically it has received, it is a worry free Cabriolet, ready to be enjoyed just in time for summer!

Feel free to ask me any questions at all.  Residents around the country I am happy to be flexible for your arranged shipper so that you can get your new car as soon as possible.
CA residents, please note the license plates will be retained by the current owner.

My standard disclaimer/mantra for any car regardless of service or price: The car is sold with no warranty.  You are buying a used car.  Eventually every car will break, if you find one that doesn’t please let me know.  I do my ABSOLUTE BEST to offer only cars that are of TOP NOTCH service.  I AM NOT A DEALER, just a guy who loves Porsches (among other cars) and hope to pass along my passion and fervor for these cars.  That said if ever you encounter an issue I do my best to provide advice, direction or even parts if I have them.  Please understand that it is a used car and will have minor signs of use.  That means please do not expect a showroom brand new car. Please adjust your expectation level to that of a 72,000 mile car, but however is well above average for it’s year/miles especially with its restoration.   This is solid miles for a Porsche of this year, but please just remember that no 72,000 mile car is perfect.  It is though a very clean, very nice 911!  PLEASE ONLY BID IF YOU INTEND TO BUY.  If you would like to have an Ebay 3rd party mechanic service check out the car I MORE than welcome it.  Please have the car checked out BEFORE bidding and not after, if you intend to use that service.  And please, if you would like to utilize this service, contact me with more than a couple days left in the auction so we can arrange schedules.  Please check your local laws and registration procedures before buying.
Buying over the internet can be scary sometimes!  I get it, because I am an enthusiast too!!  For that very reason, I am more than happy to answer every and any question you may so you know 100% what you are buying.  But, please ask any and all questions ahead of purchase!  All sales are final, you are buying as-is, the sky is blue, etc, etc. Sorry to have to give the boring speech.

Please feel free to ask any and all questions!!
